It's Monday, June 16th. Here's what's happening.
🍿 The Big Picture
So far, the summer box office numbers are... not horrible. And that's good. But is good enough?
On the bright side, Universal's How to Train Your Dragon opened to a very good (some might even say great) $83 million domestic opening weekend, and A24's Materialists opened with an equally impressive $12 million. Lilo and Stitch, Sinners, and A Minecraft were also surprise hits, so maybe we should be happy with what we have so far, and not make perfect the enemy of good.
However, the overall box office totals for this year (while slightly above last year's) are still 26% behind 2019. Plus, with key blockbusters like Warner Bros.' Superman and F1 waiting in the wings, it's way too early to tell much. The Fourth of July weekend seems wide open for Universal once again with Jurassic World: Rebirth. By the time Disney unveils The Fantastic Four: First Steps on July 25, we'll have a pretty clear picture.
In the meantime, I'm cautiously optimistic. And that's good. Right?
