It's Friday, June 13th. Here's what's happening.
🍿 The Big Picture
While major film studios are tossing aside their cable TV arms, FAST channels (Free Ad Supported Television) are actually on the rise. If you have a Roku or a Samsung TV, you've got their FAST network installed already, no cable required.
Platforms like Pluto, Tubi, Freevee, Samsung TV Plus and the Roku Channel are popular streamers that make their money the old fashioned way: advertising. Plus, content providers find they can build and program a FAST channel quickly and (if they go niche enough), operate it without a ton of direct competition.
Take Pluto TV, for example. They just announced their own All Women's Sports Network FAST Channel (a smart move, considering the booming interest in women's sports).
For indie filmmakers, Tubi just announced a partnership with Kickstarter's FilmStream Collective Fund. The channel will showcase the work of 20 producers that use the fund to finance their feature film. Tubi is a streamer with 97 million active users. It’s a huge audience for filmmakers and Tubi gets content that’s already proven to spark interest. That’s what you call a win-win.
