IMAX Shifts Into High Gear, Topping Sales Targets
Racing scene from Apple Original Films’ “F1 The Movie,” now in theaters and IMAX.

Welcome to MovieNewsPro for Thursday, July 24th, 2025. Here's what you need to know.

🎬 Today's Take

The theater business is a tough racket these days, so it was welcome news when IMAX beat its Q2 sales target and Wall Street forecasts yesterday. The company reported its highest-grossing domestic quarter ever, with $143 million in revenue, a 19% increase compared to 2024. Net income for the quarter surged by 139%. IMAX is clearly growing, and that’s something to celebrate in this challenging movie theater landscape.

What fueled the high-octane numbers? The large-format theater chain benefited from a strong lineup of summer blockbusters, including Warner Bros. SinnersParamount's Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, and Apple's F1: The Movie. The numbers on F1 were so solid, that IMAX has announced it will re-release F1 in its theaters this August. The company is also expanding its footprint, adding new screens in cities like New York and Los Angeles.

While competitors struggle under heavy debt and chase meme-stock hype, IMAX has consistently delivered solid financial results. The stock is up 21% over the past six months and nearly 60% year-over-year. With a P/E ratio of 62, IMAX stock isn't cheap, but its value is being supported by a growing number of films made specifically for its proprietary format. Christopher Nolan’s upcoming The Odyssey, for instance, was shot entirely in the IMAX format. Tickets for the movie have sold out one year in advance of its release.

IMAX may not cater to the arthouse crowd, which increasingly turns to streaming platforms for indie content. They don't even court that audience. They wisely stay in their lane. But for audiences seeking big-screen, blockbuster "popcorn movie" experiences, IMAX appears to be shifting into high gear.
